Spiral pins, which are know as coiled spring pins, are self-retaining fasteners. Spiral pins are manufactured by roll forming a met strip into a spiral cross section of coils. Spiral pins have a body diameter that is larger than the recommended hole diameter and also have chamfers on both ends to facilitate starting the pin into the hole. It is the spring action of the pin that allows it to compress as it assumes the diameter of the hole. As spiral pins are installed, compression begins at the outer edge and moves through the coils towards the center.
Spiral pins are excellent for dynamic applications. Spiral pins can be used for a wide variety of applications including alignment and stopping, fastening components together, and in automotive and electrical industries. W.M. Berg manufactures high quality spiral pins and will work to custom engineer a precision parts solution for your exact needs.
