A set screw is a screw that is generally used to secure an object within another object or against another object. Commonly, set screws are used to secure a pulley or gear to a shaft. Set screws are generally headless, or blind, meaning the screw is fully threaded and has no head projecting beyond the major diameter of the screw thread. Set screws are usually used only for transmitting light loads because set screws are not the best way to resist torque of driven shafts. For longer life, set screws are made of alloy steel and are case hardened.
